Spring Training Done, Can The Sox Repeat?

Last year was undoubtedly a dream season for the Red Sox. After leading the AL East pretty much April through September they impressively rolled through the playoffs beating strong teams, ultimately winning the World Series Championship against LA. Red Sox Nation was rejoicing all season long.

Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez put up career years and both made a strong run for MVP with Mookie Betts deservedly getting the award. All indications and opinions have said that these two fearsome hitters have shown up to spring training with even better attitudes. Their focus is now on repeating; a feat that hasn’t happened for a while in baseball.

Manager Alex Cora has wisely invited many Red Sox living legends like David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, Jason Varitek, and yes Dustin Pedroia (still active) to be around the young flourishing team as mentors and veteran leadership. The old guys have all been remarking how down to earth the team is in focusing on repeating and not merely resting on their laurels!

And it’s not only Betts and Martinez; Benintendi, Bradley ,Pearce, Devers, and Bogaerts are returning too, all looking to contribute even more to the long-term success of the Red Sox team! Spring training at beautiful JetBlue Park has been mostly experimental with Alex Cora shuffling lineups and trying different combos. read more

Legendary Red Sox Hitter David Ortiz Finally Joins 500 Homerun Club

We all knew it would happen sometime….then finally it happened last Saturday September 12, 2015. Red Sox 1B/DH/3-time World Champion David Ortiz has now joined the All-Important 500 Homerun Club. Making him a stronger contender for the MLB Hall of Fame, maybe even on a first ballot! (Anything later will be an injustice!)

Most fittingly, Ortiz did it in his typical fashion also launching 2 clutch homeruns in the same game and propelling the Red Sox to a victory once again. As of now he has accomplished this 2 homers in one game feat 50 times in his amazing career.

Pitcher Matt Moore thought he could throw a 80.3 mph knuckle-curve by Big Papi (as his teammates affectionately nicknamed him long ago ) but the ball was promptly launced into the bleachers of Tampa Bays Tropicana Field. It went a total of 432 feet and was measured to leave Ortiz’s bat at a speed of 106 miles per hour. For Ortiz, it was just another in a series of home run walks around the park.

Although many games have been played at 1st base by Ortiz, most of his HRs have been hit while starting the game as a Designated Hitter or DH.  He is in fact the all-time HR leader for that position. He has never batted in the 1st, 2nd, or 9th slots in the batting order because not only does he slug home RBI’s but he also hits at a high average for a power hitter. Many times over .300! Any manager knows he’s the guy you coming to the plate with men on base. Opposing managers have tried to maneuver the defense with shifts, pitch outs, walks, high pitch counts, and mixing up the roatation on the ball. Somehow ortiz almost always makes contact and pokes the ball to somewhere on the field where ther is not an opposing player. If not there on field tt usually will be an upper deck blast.

Nobody can forget his uncanny ability to come through in the clutch. Especially in playoff series against the Yankees, Tigers, Indians, etc. Without his homerun over Tori Hunter and into the Right Field bullpen at Fenway Park in 2013…. the Red Sox would not have advanced past Detroit and into another World Series Win. Oh yeah and in case I forgot to mention….Ortiz is a unique Red Sox Player in that he was a member of the 2004 team, the 2007 squad, AND the 2013 crew that won it all in the World Series.
What a treat for Red Sox nation to see such an incredibly talented and legendary player. Go

As Spring Training Closes Out: Red Sox Bats Are Heating Up

Red Sox sluggers David Ortiz and Mike Napoli have seen limited action this spring due to nagging injuries. Manager John Farrell has been shuffling spring training lineups, experimenting to see who can step up and produce runs for the team in the 2015.  Ortiz and Napoli have been known to carry the team on their backs and were spectacular during the 2013 Championship drive.  However, given the struggles last season, the Red Sox will need some extra offensive punch to return to its past efficiency.

Sure it’s still spring training, but Mookie Betts has shown that he can hit with consistency.  Posting an average of .487 with 2 HRs with 5 RBIs and an astonishing .923 Slugging percentage, Mookie Betts looks to secure a spot with the squad going forward into the regular season. His blazing speed was on display with an inside-the-park home-run in this short spring training schedule where he has appeared in 13 games so far.  Betts’ league leading On-Base-Percentage of .512 makes him look like the best candidate for the Red Sox leadoff spot, a role the team has struggled to replace since Jacoby Ellsbury departed to New York.

In a surprise game winning homerun in spring training play, Rusney Castillo drew attention that he can contribute to the ball club too. He may have to start the season at Triple AAA Pawtucket but undoubtedly John Farrell will need some big bats to bring up as the season progresses and nobody knows when injuries and fatigue can take effect.

Looking at these up and coming batters along with Sandoval, Ramirez, Napoli, and Ortiz it does not take too much to figure out that the Red Sox lineup will be quite a formidable one to contend with. Offensively, the Sox have as much potential as any other team in major league baseball.  If the pitching can hold up, this team might just be able to bounce back into the pennant race.

The Resurrection of David Ortiz

Hector Noesi had never faced David Ortiz before. He was in his second inning of work, mopping up for starter Freddy Garcia, who got whacked harder than a piñata at a second grader’s birthday party. Noesi had walked Adrian Gonzalez to start
